Ron Josephs SM - Sydney

28 June 1932 - 2 February 2012

People throughout Australia who knew Ron Josephs were saddened by his death on Thursday 2 February at Longueville Private Hospital, in Sydney. For some months Ron had been suffering from cancer and was receiving palliative care at the time of his death. He died on the 55th anniversary of his religious profession in the Society of Mary as a Marist priest.

He was born at Millers Point 28 June 1932 to Albert and Annie Josephs and was baptised at St Patrick’s Church, Sydney, by Fr Piquet, the legendary French Marist priest. He was educated by the Sisters of Mercy and the Marist Brothers in the Rocks district and then worked for a short period of time with the NSW State Education Department. He was ordained a Marist priest on the 7 Jul 1962. He worked in various schools the Marist Fathers had under their care, including Marist College Burnie, Tasmania. For some 15 years he was involved in parish ministry and then later on became very involved in the Charistmatic Prayer movement. Ron spent some time overseas in the UK and Ireland involved in retreat ministry and then eventually returned to Australia. Prior to his return to Sydney last year (2011) he was attached to the Burnie Wynyard Parish in the Archdiocese of Hobart.

He will be remembered by many with a great fondness for his prayer ministry, his kindness, infectious laughter and song. His funeral will take place at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church on Wednesday 8 February and he will be laid to rest in the Marist Father’s section of Macquarie Park Cemetery, North Ryde. Rest now in peace Ron and enjoy the reward prepared for you by the Lord you loved and served so faithfully.

Father John Girdauskas, Devonport, Tasmania.
