Paul Jacobs - Sydney

17th June 1941 – 16th January 2010

Paul was born at Parramatta on 17th June 1941, the fourth child and third son of Doris and Ernest Jacobs. He attended St Patrick’s Primary School at Parramatta, then Parramatta Marist High School. In 1956 he entered St Columba’s College, Springwood, where he completed his secondary schooling, before commencing his studies for the priesthood, first at Springwood then at St Patrick’s, Manly.

He was ordained at St Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney, on 18th July 1964. His first appointment was as an Assistant Priest at Chatswood. He was then appointed Assistant Priest at Punchbowl (1969) and Bondi Beach (1970). Paul spent time on loan to the Wilcannia Forbes Diocese from 1974 to 1975. He was then appointed Assistant Priest at East Granville (1975) and Greystanes (1979).

Paul was appointed Administrator at Emu Plains (1980), Surry Hills (1980) and Penshurst (1981). He was appointed Parish Priest at Penshurst in 1984 and then in 1989 he was also appointed the Parish Priest of Peakhurst. He remained Parish Priest of both parishes until he retired in August 2000. Paul served as a member of the Council of Priests from 2001 until 2004.

Paul was well regarded for his administrative and organising abilities – the church at Penshurst is one of his legacies. He was also very caring and generous to people – the full extent of his generosity is known only to God.
