Maurice Walsh - Cairns

10 September 1923 - 22 November 2009

Monsignor Maurice Walsh was born on 10th September 1923, Nanango, Qld, and was ordained at St Stephen's Cathedral, Brisbane, on 30th June 1952, for the Diocese of Cairns.  He died at the Toowoomba Base Hospital on Sunday 22nd November 2009, aged 86 years.

Maurice was burried in his home town at Nanango 1st December. Bishop James Foley of Cairns was the main celebrant and preached, while Archbishop John Bathersby, Bishop Ray Benjamin and 20 priests from the Dioceses of Cairns, Toowoomba and Brishane attended.

Maurice was apppointed Assistant Priest, St Michael's Gordonvale 1952-1954; Parish Priest, St Clare's, Tully, 1956-1971; exercised an apostolate to remote areas of Cape York Penninsular (Gulf Mission) combined with other appointments, during this period. He was appointed Parish Priest, Mother of Good Counsel, North Cairns 1971-1973, Administrator St Monica's Cathedral, Cairns 1973-1975. He was appointed Vicar General in 1975, and Parish Priest, Mother of Good Counsel, North Cairns 1975-1991. Maurice was chaplain to Holy Spirit Bethlehem Home for Aged Care 1991, and Police Chaplain 1994.
